Description
70 and 72 Corringham Road are a pair of houses built in 1911 by architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are constructed of red-brown brick in Flemish bond with red brick dressings. The roofs are tiled, with No. 70 featuring a hipped roof and swept, boxed eaves, while No. 72 has a hipped roof on its rear wing that steps down from a three-storey gable end. The main range consists of two storeys with hipped dormers, three on the front and one on the inside return of the crosswing that forms No. 70.
The design follows the Vernacular Revival style, featuring flat-arched openings, with windows that have original casements. Notable architectural elements include a full-height polygonal bay on the first hall range, an entrance to the right in the centre of the hall elevation with a door of original design and a heavy bracket porch with a relieving arch above. The entrance to No. 72 is located on the return of the crosswing. The casements are arranged in two and three lights.
The exterior of No. 72 has an external gable stack on the return, while there is an axial ridge stack on the party wall. A distinctive feature of No. 70 is the pair of axial external stacks on the right return, framing a brick gable dormer that slightly projects from the line of the stacks. The ground-floor windows have weatherings. The rear elevation includes a six-window range with outer pairs set in projecting hipped crosswings, one dormer on the left-hand wing, and a stack on the inside return of that wing, along with a single-storey hipped wing between the two wings.
The arrangement of the front is a mirror image of Nos. 66 and 68 Corringham Road. This pair forms part of an important group designed by Parker and Unwin, which includes Nos. 62-76 even on Corringham Road and Nos. 1-17 odd and 2-18 even on Corringway. For further comments on the style of this group, refer to the description for Nos. 1 and 3 Corringway.
