Description

A pair of houses built in 1912-1913 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, located within the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with red brick and tile dressings, and painted pebbledash to bay areas and oversailing gable ends. They have a hipped tile roof with swept, boxed eaves. The outer corners each feature a setback range with a single window, while the projecting central section – located roughly midway between the two houses – has two windows and is bilaterally symmetrical, with entrances within round-arched recessed porches, the arches constructed of tile. To the side of each entrance is a shallow niche with a trapezoidal head containing a casement window mirroring the arch's form. The central section is further distinguished by narrow, canted bays finishing in oversailing gable heads, broad eaves to the bay returns, decorative flashing to the first-floor sill, and weathering to the first-floor bay window. The proportional relationship between the bay, its oversailing gable, and the projecting brickwork is particularly expressive, differentiating these houses from similar designs elsewhere. An axial ridge stack sits atop the party wall, and a chimney breast extends from the returns; the left return has a two-window range, a hipped half dormer, and a round window to the ground floor near the front corner. These houses are part of a series of notable Parker and Unwin designs and are listed for their intrinsic design value as well as for their contribution to the group that includes numbers 81-87 and 93-99 Corringham Road.
