Description

Numbers 1 and 3 and the attached wall are a pair of houses constructed in 1911 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb development, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with red brick dressings. The roofs are tiled, with swept and boxed eaves, and include hipped dormers. The houses have two storeys and a six-window range facing Corringham Road, and a five-window range facing Corringway. The design is influenced by English Classicism, though the architectural style blends with vernacular qualities as it extends along Corringham Road.

A projecting rectangular bay is used to turn the oblique corner. The entrance to Number 76 Corringham Road is located within the second window bay, and is sheltered by a bracketed porch. Most of the openings on the Corringham Road elevation have flat arches, with the exception of a round-arched cross passage in the third window bay, which has an original plank gate. An axial stack is positioned above this passage, and a second axial stack is to the left of the second window range. The wall at the corner rebates forward at an oblique angle and returns to Numbers 1 and 3 Corringway, where the entrances are positioned in the first and fourth window ranges, each beneath a round relieving arch. A round window is located to the left of the first entrance. All other openings are flat-arched. The second window range is treated as a full-height polygonal bay. An axial ridge stack is on the party wall, with an external stack visible on the return. Original casement windows and doors are retained.

The buildings form part of a significant design by Parker and Unwin, which includes numbers 78-90 (even) and 101-117 (odd) Corringham Road, numbers 2 and 4 (with 74 Corringham Road), 5-17 (odd) and 6-18 (even) Corringway, and a single-storey brick wall and utility range linking Number 76 Corringham Road with Number 78.
