Description
Numbers 1 to 9 and attached wood railings comprise a group of houses dating to 1911, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The houses are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with tile roofs featuring swept and boxed eaves. The architectural style draws upon vernacular architecture, presented in a variation of the extended double-ended hall house plan, though the design is bilaterally symmetrical. The central, sixteen-window range is flanked by projecting hipped bays, with gaps in the roofline marked by pairs of stacks. A two-bay Tuscan loggia with original railings encloses a porch on the first floor, linked to the eaves by a coved cornice. Below the loggia are two round-arched passages leading to the rear garden. The crosswings are bilaterally symmetrical, each with a half-hipped gable to the second floor and one dormer window. The entrances to numbers 1 and 7 are situated in the corner bays of the hall range; number 1’s entrance has a porch which is not of original design, while number 7’s entrance features an original bracket porch. Numbers 3 and 5 have entrances set within the eleventh and sixth window ranges, each rising to a hipped, half dormer. Shallow canted bays are present on the ground floors of numbers 3 and 5. Each projecting crosswing possesses a polygonal bay on the ground floor’s center, extending to become a first-floor balcony enclosed by original railings. The windows are leaded light casements, mullioned and transomed, with two, three, or four lights. Most openings are flat-arched, with exceptions as noted. Axial stacks are located on the rear slope in the party walls between numbers 3 and 5, 7 and 9, and 1 and 51 Hampstead Way. Number 9’s entrance is on a return, beneath a bracket porch, with a half-hipped, half dormer and stack to one side. Original doors are present. The elevation facing Hampstead Way showcases a two-window range with a central half dormer to the right and a stack to the left. The appearance closely mirrors that of numbers 2 to 10 Heath Close (even), and number 48 Hampstead Way. The buildings on both sides of Heath Close form a group with the entrance to Waterlow Court.
