Description

A pair of houses at 5 and 7 Rotherwick Road, built in 1910, designed by the Letchworth office of Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The houses were designed based on the plan of a double-ended hall house. They are constructed of deep red brick in Flemish bond, with a tile hip roof. The houses are two storeys high, with a two-window-range hall section and shallow crosswings each with a single window. The design shows traces of the Vernacular revival style, evidenced in the hall-house plan and the use of rich materials, but tempered by a restraint and breadth of treatment contemporary to their completion. Each crosswing features a shallow segmental bay of six full-height windows, finished with oversailing boxed eaves; elsewhere, the eaves feature a dentil cornice and entablature band. Quoin strips define the corners of the crosswings. Segmental-arched, recessed entrance porches are located on the outer corner of each hall range. Three-light windows flank the party wall on each floor. A lintel band runs above the ground-floor openings, while a sill band is present above the first-floor openings. No. 7 retains a single hipped dormer of original design. A square ridge stack is located on the party wall and rear slope. Horizontal bands continue around the returns, where a chimney breast with tile-covered offsets is visible, topped by an axial, moulded stack which introduces a diagonal movement to the returns and corners. The windows have leaded casement lights of an original design. The properties form a pair with numbers 8 and 10 opposite and represent early examples of a style that became common within the Suburb.
