Description
A pair of houses located at 1 and 3 Rotherwick Road, Barnet, built in 1909. They were designed by H. C. Hollis and C. P. Wade, who worked in the offices of Parker and Unwin. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with tile roofs. They have a Z-shaped plan. The front elevation, facing Finchley Road, has a two-window range. The returns are a one-window range and a three-window range, facing a corner courtyard. The Rotherwick Road elevation, which is gabled and stepped back, is a two-window range, with a more informally massed rear wing containing scattered window openings. The three-window range of the courtyard elevation is treated as a series of half-dormers facing the gable, with brickwork detailing, as is the single-window range to the left. All four gables rise from a parapet that is pierced between the valleys for rainwater spouts, leading to original rainwater heads. The entrance to No. 1 is facing the courtyard, to the left of the gable range, and is approached via a porch with a pitched roof that becomes hipped over a bay to the left. The entrance to No. 3 is on Rotherwick Road, with an altered porch, but the original door and its furniture remain. Above the entrance to No. 3 are a pair of hipped half-dormers with clerestory strip lights. The elevation steps down to a rear extension that originally served as a garage; the original garage doors are intact, and its facing gable has a louvred light. The original design casement windows are throughout the property. All gables feature attenuated kneelers and copings made of tile flats and bricks. External brick stacks are present on the gable ends. An axial ridge stack is located between the first and second window range of the courtyard and to the rear slope of the range to the left. These houses are part of a pair with No. 2 Rotherwick Road and function as gateway buildings.
