Description
House, dated 1909, as shown on rainwater heads at the end walls. Designed by H. C. Hollis and C. P. Wade, who were important assistants in the office of Parker and Unwin. The house is built of brown brick in Flemish bond, with dark brick diapering and tile dressings. It has a tile roof. The design is a "Suntrap," a broad canted plan favoured by many designers associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement. The house is bilaterally symmetrical around a two-storey, one-window range, with a gabled entrance porch at the join of the two wings. There are two windows to the left gable end, and one oriel window to the right. A two-storey, flat-roofed addition from the 20th century serves as a garage. All openings are flat-arched; the entrance is set in a shallow porch with angled sides and a trapezoidal front step, with tile flats forming the lintel. There is a small eyebrow light on either side, creating a tripartite motif found on many Parker and Unwin designs in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. A plank door with original door furniture is present. Many openings have metal flashing to the lintels and sills. A gabled dormer above the entrance has cheek returns of eaves. The courtyard elevation is symmetrical, with one window to the single-storey elevations flanking the entrance range. Stilted kneelers are present to the gable ends, each with an external peak stack. The coping of all gables is formed from tile and brick laid in soldier courses. There is a shallow segmental bay to the ground floor on the left return, which has two entrances in the single-storey wing to the rear. Leaded light casements of original design are present. The rear elevation to the left wing has two gable-facing half-dormers, each with an oriel window. This is one of a pair of gateway buildings including numbers 1 and 3 odd Rotherwick Road.
