Description
Nos 2 and 4 on Shirehall Lane are a pair of early 18th century cottages that have undergone significant alterations in the early to mid-19th century and later. Each cottage is two stories tall with an attic and features one window. They have a fairly high-pitched tiled roof with a central chimney stack and two modern dormers. The cottages are constructed of red brick with a parapet that has been raised above a cornice band. There are gauged flat brick arches above modern casement windows that have rectangular panes. On the first floor and parapet, there are two Sun fire assurance plaques. The doors have four fielded panels and two flat panels, with cornice heads; the door of No 2 has a moulded design, while No 4 features a key pattern. Both doors have rectangular fanlights with bars, set within moulded architraves. The cottages also have dentil cornices supported by fluted brackets, which are broken back in the center and topped with a dentilled pediment. Inside, there are elliptical hall arches and some old dado rails, but much of the window woodwork is missing and the fireplaces have been altered.
