Description
36 and 38 Newlands are two cottages that likely date from the early to mid-17th century. They have been significantly altered and refronted, probably in the early 19th century, with further changes made in the 20th century. The front of the cottages features mostly red brick, with some pebble-dashing, and the internal structure includes timber-framing. The roof is covered with plain tiles, with older tiles on the right side, and has painted brick dentilled eaves. There are shared brick end stacks and three dormers; the right dormer is gabled and has renewed triple 2/2 casements, while the left dormers were rebuilt in the 20th century and have flat roofs.
The exterior is a single storey with an attic and consists of three bays. No. 38, on the left, has two remodeled 12-pane windows beneath segmental brick arches, flanking a similarly-arched central doorcase with a 20th-century door. It features two iron S ties and a deep painted plinth. No. 36, on the right, has a small 4-pane window on the right and a doorcase on the left with a 20th-century gabled hood and door, without a plinth.
Inside, there is exposed square-panel timber-framing in the rear wall and the studded party wall, with some surviving wattle and daub infill. The interior also includes large fireplaces and an internal chimney breast, a timber doorcase leading to the stairs, chamfered spine beams, exposed roof trusses, some ledged and battened doors made of wide planks, and wide floorboards.
