Description
Nos 40 and 41 on Church Street are a pair of cottages dating from the 18th century, located at the end of a row. They are constructed from coursed rubble made of Ham stone, with ashlar dressings, and feature a thatched roof that abuts to the north and is coped to the south, along with brick chimney stacks. The cottages are two storeys high and consist of three bays. The ground floor has hollow-chamfered mullioned windows set in chamfered recesses, complete with labels. The upper storey features chamfer-mullioned windows of a different profile, which are set into the thatch; these are 20th-century replacements in stone walling that has replaced cob. There are boarded doors in plain openings to the right of the first bay and between the second and third bays, along with another mullioned window with a label in the south gable. The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to have numerous alterations and little of interest. The cottages are primarily listed for their significant group value in the centre of the village.
