Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house built in 1841, located nearly on the site of its predecessor. The building is constructed from roughly cut and squared ham stone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. It has brick and stone chimney stacks. The north elevation has two storeys and three bays, with a plinth, band and eaves courses, plain pilaster strips between the bays, and double pilasters at the corners. The windows are 12-pane sash windows set in architraves. In the lower bay two, there is a pair of three-panelled doors with a fixed toplight above, situated in an architraved recess and accessed by two steps. The west elevation mirrors this with four bays, the fourth bay projecting slightly, while the east elevation is less elaborate and includes a lean-to on the south side. The interior has not been fully seen, but the lobby is noted to have a late Regency character.

Attached to the north-west corner of the house is a short length of double-carved ashlar wall topped with cast-iron spearpoint railings. This leads to a wall of cut and squared stone with thin ashlar coping, approximately three metres high, which continues to the east gateway of the churchyard, enhancing the setting of the house and the approach to the Church of St George.
