Description
The garden temple, located approximately 100 metres north-west of Oak Hill Theological College, is an early 19th-century garden structure designed in the style of the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. It is constructed of stone with a brick dome that was formerly covered with lead, resting on a circular plinth with three steps. At the end of the steps, two small arms with plain stone piers extend towards the open front, which features Corinthian columns that support the entablature and dome, topped with a vase and a pineapple. The rear of the temple is enclosed with pilasters, creating a sheltered area. The floor is made of feathered stone flags, embellished with a rich Greek-key pattern inlaid border. Although little is known about the former gardens, the temple was clearly an important feature, deliberately positioned and is a rare survival in this part of London.
