Description
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, located on Church Hill Road in East Barnet, dates back to around 1080 and was originally built by a community of monks. This early church is a single cell structure with an apsidal east end. The north wall remains intact, while fragments of the south wall are incorporated into later work. In the 19th century, the church was enlarged to include a south aisle, a chancel, and an organ recess on the north side. A modern vestry has also been added to the south side. The gallery at the west end was likely renewed in the 19th century, and a tower was added around 1828. The church features several hatchments from the 18th and 19th centuries.
