Description

BARNET, LB TQ2588 SAMUNS HILL, Hampstead Garden Suburb 31-0/26/10098 (South East side) Nos.10 AND 12

GV II

Pa1r of artisans' cottages. 1909. Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. Painted pebbledash with plinth of red brick in Flemish bond, painted to No.10; weatherboarding to first-floor balconies. Hipped roof of tile with pronounced flaring eaves and exposed rafter ends. Two storeys. Four-window range to pair. Pair of deep canted bays to ground floor with balconies above; to either side of pair, near outer corners of the elevation, a segmental-arched recessed porch. All openings are flat arched with casements of original design. Horizontal proportions of the block enhanced by pair of small, square lights on first floor above entrance and by hipped roof. Square stack to party wall on front slope of roof. Pair of stacks to rear slope. Returns of two-window range. Single-storey extension to rear of each. Design conforms to the paired, canted bay type which is found throughout the artisans' quarter of the Suburb. The Asmuns Hill group is a most important example of a complete Parker and Unwin streetscape.
