Description

10 and 12 Asmuns Hill are a pair of artisans' cottages built in 1909 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages feature painted pebbledash with a plinth of red brick in Flemish bond, painted on No. 10, and weatherboarding on the first-floor balconies. They have a hipped tiled roof with pronounced flaring eaves and exposed rafter ends. The buildings are two storeys high and have a four-window range. The ground floor includes two deep canted bays with balconies above, and each side of the pair has a segmental-arched recessed porch near the outer corners. All openings are flat arched with original design casements. The horizontal proportions of the block are enhanced by a pair of small square lights on the first floor above the entrance and by the hipped roof. There is a square stack on the party wall on the front slope of the roof and a pair of stacks on the rear slope. Each cottage has returns with a two-window range and a single-storey extension at the rear. This design reflects the paired, canted bay type commonly found in the artisans' quarter of the suburb. The Asmuns Hill group is a significant example of a complete streetscape designed by Parker and Unwin.
