Description
140 and 142 Hampstead Way are a pair of artisans' cottages built in 1907 by architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages are finished in painted pebbledash and feature a tiled roof with swept eaves and exposed rafters. They are two stories high and have a symmetrical two-window arrangement. Designed in the Vernacular Revival style, the entrances are located on the sides in recessed porches accessed through a round arch that is flush with the brick chimney breast; the porch for No. 140 has been glazed in the late 20th century.
All the casement windows have flat arches with weathering, except for those in the bays, and they are of an original design. The first-floor windows are half dormers with eaves cheeks, and there is a canted bay below each with ornamental lead flashing. The ground floor features two-light windows at the outer corners. On the returns, casements flank the chimney breasts on both the ground and first floors. There are ridge stacks on the party wall, all with a dentil band, and tile creasing is present on the gable kneelers. Each cottage has a weatherboarded outshut. A plinth band is set with memorial stones that are incised with initials. A plaque on No. 142 identifies the pair as the first built in the Suburb and notes that the Lord Mayor of London visited them in 1957, the Jubilee Year of the Suburb. The sod-turning ceremony for the site took place on May 2, 1907.
