Description
This is a group of three artisans' cottages located on Hampstead Way, built in 1907-08 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. Designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, the cottages are constructed of painted pebbledash with tile roofs, featuring exposed rafter ends. Brick and tile dressings are also present, including tile kneelers.
Nos. 160 and 162 form a single block of two-window range, roughly rectangular in plan, with a centrally placed half dormer. The ground-floor openings are offset from those of the first floor, with entrances recessed within segmental-arched porches. A ridge stack is present. The left return of No. 162 is a one-window range, and has a chimney breast in the rear corner. No. 164 is treated as a facing gable situated to the rear of the block that comprises Nos. 160 and 162, and has a five-window range. A canted bay window is visible on the rear return of No. 162.
All windows have weathering and flat arches, with the first-floor window weathering continuous. The rear of No. 160 includes a single-storey outshut. Dormers above are likely later additions. The original design door remains on No. 160, and casement windows of an original design are present throughout. The building line changes, creating a small courtyard to the left, related to the building lines of Nos. 154, 156, and 158 Hampstead Way.
