Description
A pair of artisans' cottages dating to 1908, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, and forming the entrance to Asmuns Place, a significant cul-de-sac inspired by designs in Unwin’s “Town Planning in Practice.” The cottages are painted pebbledash with tile hanging to the gable end of number 4; number 2 features weatherboarding to the first-floor balcony and a tile roof with swept eaves. They are built in the single-ended hall house style, with a hall wing of one window range to the gable-facing half dormer. Number 2 has a French door with sidelights to the crosswing, and a possible later attic light to the gable peak. The entrance to number 2 is set in a canted recess with a deep bay that extends as a balcony to the first floor. The elevation of number 4 is asymmetrical. The cottages feature flat-arched openings, many with weatherings. They include a chimney breast and tall stack to the party wall at the inside corner of the crosswing, an external gable stack to the return of number 4, and a ridge of party wall and rear slope to number 2. They are visually paired with numbers 1 and 3 Asmuns Place.
