Description

The houses at Numbers 17 to 23, together with the attached garden wall, were built in 1908 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The design is attributed to Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, with possible involvement from Charles P. Wade, an assistant in their office. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with brick dressings and a tile roof. They are rectangular in plan, featuring a seven-window range arranged symmetrically and closely resembling the appearance of Numbers 18 to 24. A stilted facing gable sits centrally, flanked by a first-floor oriel and small windows, a design repeated in other Parker and Unwin buildings within the Suburb. A round-arched cross passage, built with red brick, is located below the oriel, with the entrance to Number 19 on the canted return. All window openings are flat arched, and ground floor windows have tile creasing within relieving arches. The first-floor windows are treated as half dormers with hipped roofs, with gutters spanning across the windows. Ridge stacks are situated on the party walls between Numbers 17 and 19, and 21 and 23. The original design of the doors remains. The listing also includes a section of the garden wall belonging to Number 23, which extends to Number 25. A rear extension to Number 23 is not included in its corresponding listing. A two-window range with one hipped half dormer is present on the return, but a late 20th-century skylight is not considered to be of special interest. These houses are part of a significant group encompassing Numbers 1 to 59 (odd), and 2 to 52 (even) in Asmuns Place.
