Description

Numbers 25 to 43 form artisans’ cottages, built in 1908 as part of the west court of Asmuns Place, a cul-de-sac within the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The design is attributed to Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, with possible involvement from Charles Wade, a significant architect within their office who was responsible for numerous buildings in the area. The cottages are constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with red brick and tile dressings. The roofs are tiled with swept eaves and tile gable kneelers, and exposed rafter ends. The layout is U-shaped, meant to complement numbers 26 to 52 on the opposite side, though the courtyard is shallower due to the proximity of the plots to the Finchley Road. The end units are designed as gable-fronted cross wings, evoking the appearance of extended double-ended hall houses. The facade features a one-window range on the end units, a four-window range facing the courtyard, and a ten-window range along the long, central section. The architectural style is Vernacular Revival. The composition is roughly symmetrical, though variations exist due to the sloping site, which results in first-floor windows on the north side being either lower or treated as half dormers. A round-arched cross passage sits at the center of the building, above which is an oriel window flanked by square lights, all linked by a continuous weather moulding. The centre range continues above the eaves and terminates in a stilted facing gable. Pairs of hipped half dormers are located on either side of the centre; three similar dormers are found on the right wing with catslide roofs. Entrance detailing varies: numbers 37 and 39 have recessed porches accessed through round-arched openings, while entrances to numbers 29 and 31 are positioned on either side of the cross passage. Numbers 27 and 41 have entrances under a canopy porch supported by metal brackets. The end unit to the north, number 43, features gable heads sheathed in wood shingles, mirroring a detail found on unit 45 in the central section (numbers 45-59). The south-facing gable is plain brick. The returns to the end units are two-window wide, with the left return being taller than the right to account for changes in site level. Ridge stacks are located on alternate party walls, with additional stacks on the rear roof slope. Original-design casement windows are present on all cottages except numbers 25, 33, and 43. Included in this listing is the garden wall that connects the corner of number 25 to number 23.
