Description

A pair of artisans' cottages, built in 1907-1908 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The cottages are constructed with painted pebbledash cladding over a red brick plinth in Flemish bond, with the facade of No. 138 being painted. They have tile roofs with swept eaves and exposed rafters, including hipped roofs to the projecting stair towers. The cottages are two storeys high, with a two-window range to the main block and scattered fenestration to the returns. The design is bilaterally symmetrical, with a pair of rectangular stair towers, each lit by a clerestory strip under the eaves, flanking the party wall. Each stair tower has a pair of three-light casements on each floor. Entrances are set within round-arched recessed porches on the returns. All other openings are flat arched, and the original casements have leaded lights. Ridge stacks are situated on the party wall, and gable ends have eaves carried on purlins. Rear outshuts have catslide roofs. The listing also includes half of the garden wall and gateway that leads to the back gardens, shared between No. 138 and No. 2 Asmuns Hill, and between No. 136 and No. 134 Hampstead Way. The cottages are part of a significant group of artisans' cottages and houses situated on Hampstead Way, Asmuns Hill, and Temple Fortune Hill. The elevation of the cottages plays an important role in the streetscape, marking the end of the view along Hampstead Way from Finchley Road.
