Description

Numbers 2 to 8 and the attached garden wall are a group of artisans' cottages built in 1909 as part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The cottages are constructed of pebbledashed brick, painted except for the crosswing to Number 2, with a brick plinth in Flemish bond to the central ranges and in dressings. They have tile roofs with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends. The design treats the block as a double-ended hall house, featuring a hall range of five windows with a single window in each cross wing. The wings project less far from the hall range than they do on the adjacent numbers 1 to 7.

The architectural arrangement is symmetrical around a segmental-arched cross passage, topped by a broad half dormer of four lights. Most openings are flat-arched. The entrances to Numbers 4 and 6 are set within a segmental-arched recessed porch with canted sides, each topped by a small eyebrow window. Half dormers with hipped roofs are positioned above the first and fifth windows of the hall range. The entrances to Numbers 2 and 8 are near the outer corners of the crosswings, with a three-light window to the inside. Each cross wing has a four-light window on its first floor. All windows have weatherboards, except for the first-floor windows in the centre range, which are shielded by the eaves. Ridge stacks are located on the centre axis and at the re-entrant corners of the wings.

The listing includes a section of garden wall and a gateway shared with Number 138 Hampstead Way. The Asmuns Hill group is recognized as a significant example of a complete Parker and Unwin streetscape.
