Description
This is a row of terraced houses at numbers 32 to 54 Balcombe Street, built around 1815 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. The houses are of stock brick construction with the ground floors finished in channelled stucco. They have slate roofs and four storeys plus a basement (numbers 34 and 36 have dormered mansards). Each house front is two windows wide. Doorways are arranged semicircular on the left (numbers 32 to 44) and square-headed on the right, all featuring panelled doors set within pilaster surrounds, with entablature-style detailing above, and fanlights. The upper floors contain recessed sash windows, set beneath flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor. The houses have stone-coped parapets and continuous geometric balconies with an anthemion pattern, running along the first floors. Original cast iron area railings are present, finished with bud and spearhead finials.
