Description

TQ 2981 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER REGENT STREET, Wl 57/58 (west side) 22.11.73 Nos. 223 to 227 (odd) (including No. 4 Maddox Street and No. 21 Hanover Street) GV II Block of shops and offices between Maddox Street and Hanover Street. c.1922 by T.S. Darbyshire. Portland stone ashlar facings, slate roofs. Classical style of vaguely Beaux Arts derivation. 4 storeys, attic storey and dormered mansard. Symmetrical fenestration with slightly projecting centre in the rhythm 3:3:3, splayed corners and 6 window returns to Maddox Street and 4 window returns to Hanover Street. Ground floor altered with mid to late C.20 shop fronts and entrances. 1st floor has recessed metal casement windows flanked by pilasters carrying entablature with central pediment to each 3-window bay. 2nd floor windows have console bracketed cornices. Bracketed main cornice surmounted by urns in high relief on centre piece. 3-light cornered dormers. Cast iron balconies to 1st floor and to central window of each of 3 window bays on 2nd and 3rd floors. Decorative ridge cresting.
