Description

Nos. 223 to 227 Regent Street, including No. 4 Maddox Street and No. 21 Hanover Street, is a block of shops and offices built around 1922 by T.S. Darbyshire. The building features Portland stone ashlar facings and slate roofs, designed in a Classical style with some Beaux Arts influence. It stands four storeys high, with an attic storey and a dormered mansard roof. The symmetrical arrangement of windows follows a rhythm of three groups of three, with slightly projecting central sections, splayed corners, and six window returns on Maddox Street and four on Hanover Street. The ground floor has been altered with mid to late 20th century shop fronts and entrances. The first floor showcases recessed metal casement windows, flanked by pilasters that support an entablature with a central pediment above each three-window bay. The second floor features windows with console bracketed cornices. A bracketed main cornice is topped with urns in high relief at the center. The building includes three-light cornered dormers and cast iron balconies on the first floor and central windows of each three-window bay on the second and third floors, along with decorative ridge cresting.
