Description

This is a block of offices and shops situated on Regent Street, extending to Warwick Street. Built around 1911 by H. Tanner, it was not completed until 1928. The building is faced with Portland stone and has a slate roof. It is designed in a Neo-Classical Beaux Arts style.

The building has four main storeys, attics, and dormers set within a steep mansard roof. A podium forms the ground floor, incorporating a mezzanine level, with shop fronts defined by pilasters. The upper floors are arranged with a central three-bay section flanked by advanced pavilions, also each with three bays. Windows are architraved, with linked cornices on the first floor and segmental pediments over the second-floor windows of the central pavilion. A giant order of Ionic pilasters articulates the second and third floors of the intervening blocks, supporting a continuous entablature. Garlanded plaques, held by putti, are positioned below the bases of the pilasters on the first floor. The attics have balustraded balconies, and the pavilions have central windows rising to pediments – segmental to the outer pavilions and triangular to the centre. The parapets of the pavilion attics are adorned with urn terminals. The corner of the block is splayed, and the return elevations mirror this design. A continuous cast iron balcony runs along the first floor. The roof features lead ornamental crestings, and prominent stacks.
