Description

A terrace of fifteen houses, numbered 17 to 31, located on Sutherland Place, was constructed circa 1850-1853. The building is built of brick, with a stucco finish to the front, and has slate roofs with brick stacks. The terrace is three storeys high, with a basement and attic, and some houses have raised attic extensions. The two houses at each end of the terrace are set forward, as are the central three houses. The end pavilions feature simple pilasters with roseate capitals, while the central section has fluted Corinthian pilasters. The ground floor is rusticated and features tripartite windows, with a projecting balcony supported by iron balustrades. First-floor windows have eight-pane sashes (except number 30, which has casements), and second-floor windows have six panes, all within reeded surrounds. Cornice brackets are present below all first-floor windows; those in the right-end pavilions have pediments, and those in the central section have segmental pediments. A heavy cornice, featuring dentils on numbers 25 and 31, runs along the top of the building. Projecting Roman Doric porches provide access, with four shallow steps and triglyphs on most. Some original double-panelled doors remain. The interior has not been inspected. The terrace is notable for its unusual scale and strong architectural composition, comparable to listed buildings on Chepstow Road and elsewhere nationally. Records from Westminster City Archives and census records provide background information.
