Description

This is a terrace of four houses, numbers 4 to 8, located on Shepherd Market in the City of Westminster. The buildings date from the late 18th century, although they may have been a refacing of earlier, mid-18th century houses. They were constructed as part of the Shepherd Market development, which was laid out around 1735 and built around 1746 by Edward Shepherd, who also designed and promoted the project on the Grosvenor and Cavendish Estates. The buildings are yellow brick, with numbers 4 and 6 being stuccoed, and have slate roofs. They are four storeys high with three windows wide fronts to numbers 4 and 6, and two windows wide to number 8. The ground floors of numbers 4 and 6 now have mid-20th century shop fronts with recessed sash windows and no glazing bars to the upper floors. Number 8 retains an incomplete early to mid-19th century shop front featuring pilasters, an inswept fascia, and a decorative cast iron grille above the window. The upper floors of number 8 also have recessed sash windows with no glazing bars, set under flat, gauged arches. The buildings have parapets with copings.
