Description

Nos 42 and 43 Conduit Street are terrace houses dating from the early to mid 18th century, with some early 19th century and c1900 alterations. They are constructed of brown brick and topped with slate roofs.

No 42 has five storeys, with the top floor being an arcaded rubbed brick addition from around 1900. It features three windows and a mid-20th century shop window. The early 19th century entrance is arched with spaced voussoirs and has pilastered reveals leading to a panelled door topped with a fanlight. The upper floors have flush framed sash windows with red brick dressings and flat gauged arches, and there are c1900 iron balconettes on the first floor.

No 43 has four storeys, a basement, and a slated mansard roof with dormers. The ground floor is stuccoed and includes a later shop window, but retains an early 19th century arched doorway with an inset reeded doorcase featuring corner blocks and a fanlight. The upper floors have three revealed sash windows with red brick dressings and segmental arches. There is a stucco cornice and blocking course above the third floor, along with cast iron Victorian flower guards on the projecting bracketed stucco sills. Mid-19th century cast iron area railings are also present.
