Description
No. 5 Clifford Street is a terrace house built in 1719 by John Witt. It is constructed from yellow and red brick with a slate roof and has four storeys plus a basement. The building is three windows wide, with the entrance located on the left. The entrance features an arched wooden doorcase with a semicircular fanlight, flanked by Doric pilasters and an entablature above. The revealed sash windows, which do not have glazing bars, are topped with segmental red brick arches and dressings, panelled aprons, and 19th-century bracketed sills. A bold string course runs above the ground floor, and there is a cornice above the second floor, with a parapet that has coping. The party wall has a giant pilaster topped with an urn, which it shares with No. 4.
Inside, the house retains a panelled hall that leads to the staircase, which features fine carpentry work, including carved cut strings, turned and twisted balusters, fluted Corinthian column newels, and a moulded handrail. The staircase is simplified with a closed string above the second floor. The interior also has a panelled dado and walls, doorcases, and other features. The ground floor rear room is fully ovolo panelled, while the rest of the interior showcases plain early to mid-19th-century features.
