Description
No. 8 Clifford Street is a terrace house built in 1719. It features yellow brick construction and a slate roof, standing three tall storeys high and measuring three and a half windows wide. The ground floor has been reinstated and includes an off-centre pilastered doorway to the right, with a half window also located on the right. The revealed sash windows are topped with segmental red brick arches and dressings. The building has rusticated quoins, a plat band above the ground floor, and a stone cornice adorned with urns.
Inside, the house boasts a well-preserved interior, including a front compartment staircase to the right, which has stone steps and a wrought iron balustrade. The staircase hall is panelled and features walls and a ceiling that are beautifully frescoed in monochrome trompe l'oeil, attributed to Sir James Thornhill. The front rooms on the first floor are also panelled and have carved cornices. The rear room on the second floor includes pilasters and a painted ceiling, likely dating from the early 20th century. Additionally, the rear extension contains a second-floor room with a mid-19th century gothic chimney piece and ceiling.
