Description
Nos. 9 and 10 Stanhope Gate are terraced townhouses built around 1757-58, with some alterations from the Edwardian period. They are constructed of brown brick and topped with slate roofs, featuring three storeys and basements, along with attic storeys and dormered mansards. Each house has a front that is three windows wide.
Around 1900, stone prostyle Doric porches were added to the left and right sides of the buildings. The houses have recessed sash windows set under flat gauged red brick arches. The windows of No. 10 are distinguished by vertically placed red brick dressings and aprons at the sills. The sill bands on the first floor are cut through due to the lengthening of the windows. There are cornices above the second floor and below the parapet, which has coping.
No. 9 features an early 19th-century cast iron balcony on the first floor, while No. 10 has an Edwardian cast iron balcony designed in an 18th-century style. The area railings have been renewed in a style that reflects the 18th century.
