Description
Stanhope House is a town mansion built between 1899 and 1901 by architects Romaine Walker and Besant. It is constructed from Forest of Dean sandstone and features a slate roof. The building showcases ornate and well-detailed late Gothic elevations, standing four storeys high with a basement and dormers. The façade is three windows wide, with an extension on the left side and an entrance porch also to the left.
Notable architectural features include three symmetrical through-storey canted stone mullioned and transomed bay windows, which have traceried heads above the lights, traceried parapets, and blind tracery aprons. Similar decorative details are present on the return facing Stanhope Gate. The building also has pierced-work traceried area parapets.
Inside, the Gothic style is continued in the entrance hall, while the fine oval stairwell and principal first-floor rooms are decorated in a highly accomplished neo-Adam style, featuring ornate plasterwork ceilings and other details.
