Description

Terraced town house built around 1760, with significant alterations and heightening occurring between 1900 and 1910. The building is constructed of Portland stone with a slate roof and incorporates Louis XV-Louis XVI architectural details. It stands four storeys high, includes a basement, and has a dormered mansard roof. The facade is four windows wide. The main entrance is situated in the second bay from the right and is accessed via a portico-porch supported by coupled Ionic columns. The ground floor is channelled, with recessed glazing bar sash windows set within flat arches. The first and second floors also have recessed sash windows; those on the first floor are accentuated by cornices supported by consoles. A giant order of fluted Ionic pilasters with wreathed capitals, characteristic of the transitional Louis XV-Louis XVI style, articulates the facade, supporting a deep entablature with a modillion cornice above the second floor. The attic storey, with windows set in shallow panels, features its own cornice and blocking course. A cast iron balcony runs across the first floor, and the property is fronted by cast iron area railings. A London County Council (L.C.C.) plaque commemorates the residence of FitzRoy Somerset, Lord Raglan, a figure associated with the Crimean War. The building’s interior was rebuilt behind the original facade in 1969-71 and again in 1986/7.
