Description
This is a uniform terrace of four houses, numbers 2 to 6 Meard Street, built in 1732 by John Meard, with alterations in the 19th century and the mid-20th century. The houses are constructed of stock brick, with the lower parts stuccoed up to the first-floor sills. They are four stories high, with number 2 retaining a basement area. Number 2 has a doorway on its right side, with a later doorcase and cornice. Numbers 4 and 6 have mid-20th century shop fronts which incorporate the original house doorways. Number 2 features flush-framed casement windows, while numbers 4 and 6 have flush-framed sash windows with later 19th-century glazing, all set under flat, red brick, gauged arches. The houses have parapets with stone copings, and number 2 has wrought iron area railings.
The interiors are panelled and finished to a superior standard compared to the neighbouring odd numbers (1 to 21), although they have been damaged and partially boxed-in, especially at number 2. Features include passage halls, a dog-leg staircase with Doric column balusters and newels, cut bracket strings, raised and fielded panelling on the ground and first floors with dentil box cornices. In the front room of number 4, the back wall is a Doric pilastered recess with an ovolo moulded elliptical archivolt. Fluted Doric pilasters with enriched capitals frame the passage openings leading to the staircases.
These houses are contemporaneous with numbers 1 to 7 Meard Street and numbers 67 to 70 Dean Street, also designed by John Meard.
