Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Robert Street are terraced chambers built between 1768 and 1774 by Robert Adam, with assistance from his brothers James and William, as part of their innovative Adelphi development. Constructed from stock brick, the buildings feature 19th-century stucco on the ground floor and a slate roof. They are among the first houses in London designed specifically as letting flats or chambers.
The ashlar facade rises three storeys with an attic and includes basements and a dormered mansard roof. The buildings are five and six windows wide, respectively, with a four-window return to John Street. The ground floor has central and off-centre doorways in channelled stucco; No. 1 features an early 19th-century doorcase with pilasters and a swagged garland frieze, while No. 2 has a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight set in an original eared architrave case, complete with a husk-garland frieze and moulded cornice. The upper floors have recessed glazing bar sashes beneath flat brick arches. A moulded patent stone string course runs over the second floor, topped by a parapet with coping, and there are wrought iron area railings.
The interiors have been altered for office use, but No. 1 retains several original shallow moulded plasterwork ceilings with medallions, while No. 2 has fewer intact features, including some carved wood chimney pieces.
