Description
Nos. 4 and 6 John Adam Street are a pair of terraced townhouses built around 1772-1774 by the architect Robert Adam. They are constructed of brown brick with stucco dressings and have a slate roof. The buildings rise three storeys, with an attic storey and a basement, and each house features three windows across its façade. The doorways are located to the right, and the buildings are adorned with elongated console brackets that support dentil cornices, panelled doors, and patterned fanlights. The windows have recessed sashes set under gauged flat arches. There is a plat band at the first floor and a main cornice above the second floor, with a parapeted attic. No. 6 has cast iron balconettes on the first and second floor windows, while No. 4 has them only on the second floor. The area railings are made of cast iron and topped with urn finials.
Inside, No. 4 retains several notable features, including a geometrical staircase with a wrought iron balustrade, friezes, cornices, and chimneypieces. These houses are part of the Adam Brothers' Adelphi development.
