Description
No. 18 Adam Street is a corner terraced town house built between 1768 and 1774 by Robert Adam. It features a substantial brown brick façade with a slate roof and is part of the Adelphi development, extending with a deep return to John Adam Street. The building stands three storeys high, with an attic storey and dormered mansard, as well as a basement.
The front elevation is five windows wide, with the central three bays grouped under a pediment, and a six-window return. The ground floor has later banded rustication in stucco and a bracketed cornice, featuring a central semicircular arched entrance with vermiculated jambs and voussoirs, alongside a panelled door topped with a patterned fanlight. The ground floor also has recessed sash windows with vermiculated heads and keystones. The upper floors are adorned with glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged arches. A cornice runs above the second floor, topped by a parapet with coping. The return elevation mirrors these details and continues on No. 2 John Adam Street. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings with urn finials.
