Description
Shell-Mex House is an 1931 office block situated in the City of Westminster, designed by Messrs Joseph, with F Milton Cashmore as Principal Designer, and sculpted by WCH King. The building is constructed of Portland stone and features a flat roof. It rises to eleven or fifteen storeys. The riverside facade is symmetrical, encompassing seventeen bays and stepped inwards at the upper levels, culminating in a short central tower with a clock and buttresses incorporating inset sculpted figures. The ground floor has an open, round arched arcade. Square headed windows are set within giant relieving arches, rising from the ninth to eleventh floors in the fourth and fourteenth bays, plus the returns. An arched window is located below the clock and on the returns of the tower. Metal framed casements are present. Returns are visible to the left and right. The section along the Strand frontage (Nos. 76-88) is not of special architectural interest.
