Description
No. 2 John Adam Street is a terraced town house built around 1772-1774 by Robert Adam. The building features brown brick with a rusticated stucco ground floor and a slate roof. It has three storeys, an attic storey, and a basement, with a width of three windows that continues the return of No. 18 Adam Street.
The ground floor includes a semicircular arched entrance on the right, which is adorned with vermiculated voussoirs and jambs, a panelled door, and a patterned fanlight. The windows are recessed sashes with vermiculated heads and keystones. The upper floors also have recessed sashes set beneath flat gauged arches. There is a bracketed cornice above the ground floor and a main cornice over the second floor, with a parapeted attic. Additionally, cast iron balconettes are present on the second floor, and there are cast iron area railings with urn finials.
Inside, the house boasts a good interior featuring a geometrical staircase with wrought iron balusters, along with friezes and cornices. This property is part of the Adam Brothers' Adelphi development.
