Description

The Adelphi Theatre is a Grade II listed theatre located on the Strand in the City of Westminster. It dates back to the Sans Pareil of 1806, with various extensions and rebuilds occurring in 1824, 1834, 1846-48, 1858, 1868, the 1880s, and 1900-01, culminating in a major rebuilding in 1930 by Ernest Schaufelberg, who retained the side and rear walls. The theatre features a terracotta facade facing the Strand and has an angular "moderne" design. It stands at a height equivalent to four storeys and has a three-bay width.

The ground floor is fully canopied and includes chrome framed glazed doors leading to the foyer. The front of the building has a broad black painted sign panel that occupies the right two-thirds and is finished with a parapet, a modification made in 1937. Above the canopy, screened by hoarding, is a large horizontal octagon window with a hexagonal and lozenge glazing pattern, which is original to Schaufelberg's design.

Inside, the theatre features a long rectangular foyer decorated in 1930s chrome and plaster, with period light fittings. The auditorium has an angular straight-sided design, with two cantilevered balconies framed in concrete. It includes a squared-off faceted proscenium and polished wood flush panelling on the walls, along with upcast house lights. For the circa 1868 Royal Entrance and stage door/dressing room block, refer to Nos 18 to 20 Maiden Lane.
