Description
This building, comprising numbers 409 and 410 Strand, is a group value office building and amusement arcade constructed between 1886 and 1887 by Spencer Chadwick for the Gatti Brothers. It was originally built as the Adelphi Theatre-Restaurant. The building is constructed of stucco with polished granite dressings to the ground floor, and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys high with an attic storey and three windows wide.
The ground floor retains elements of the former restaurant frontage, which has been altered with plate glass. It features polished granite pilasters and columns that support an entablature. The first and second floors have recessed casement windows with rusticated jambs, and are articulated by a tetrastyle Corinthian portico in antis, which also carries an entablature. The attic is of Doric design with a lunette window and a balustraded balcony.
This building was part of the Gatti Brothers’ 1880s refurbishment and alteration of the adjoining Adelphi Theatre.
