Description
This is a row of three terrace houses on Berwick Street, dating from around 1736. It appears to have been built as a single development. The frontages are largely original red brick with slate roofs. The three-storey buildings each have a front three windows wide. An architraved doorway is located on the left-hand side. The windows are flush-framed sash windows, with some retaining glazing bars, and are set within flat, gauged brick arches. Brick plat bands visually separate the floors.
Original internal features remain in each house. Number 79 has a staircase with carved and cut strings, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and pilasters in the passage. Damaged egg and dart and box cornices are also present. Number 80 retains an original staircase, though the balustrade has been enclosed, and features a dentil cornice in the front room of the first floor. Number 81’s staircase has cut and carved strings and turned balusters that extend from the first floor upwards.
The return flank of Number 81, facing onto Livonia Street, incorporates a stone tablet reset from the south side of Berwick Street. This tablet is inscribed with the name "Berwick Street" and the date "1736", and features the Cavendish-Bentinck cypher surmounted by a ducal coronet.
