Description

Number 32 D'Arblay Street is a terraced house with a later shop, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings and stands three storeys high with a cellar. The ground floor features a 20th-century wooden shopfront, while the upper floors have recessed sash windows with original glazing bars, all framed by gauged red brick flat arches and stone sills. The parapet has been rebuilt.

Inside, the house retains much of its original layout and detailing. There is some panelling at the rear of the shop from the 20th century, and the access to the cellar has been boxed over. A dog leg stair runs the full height of the house, featuring turned balusters (except for one turn from the first floor), column newels, and moulded handrails. The stairwell showcases much of the original panelling and cornices.

On the first floor, the rooms are adorned with panelling and cornices, and there is a panelled partition with a panelled door that has H hinges. The front room on the second floor is mostly panelled, while the third floor front room is also panelled, with a partition leading to the stair. Some original doorcases are present, stepping outwards, and there is a fairly shallow cornice with prominent mutules and round ornaments. The door surround to the corridor is richly carved with acanthus leaves, topped by a frieze with a high relief mask and a cornice above. There is some 20th-century partitioning, and the second and third floor front rooms feature good fire surrounds. The attics have been altered in the 20th century, and the basement includes a section of early 18th-century studded dado.
