Description

This is a grand terrace of eight houses, numbers 10 to 22 Lancaster Gate, built in 1865 by John Johnson. The building is constructed of stucco with slate mansard roofs. It rises to four storeys with an attic, and incorporates a basement. Each house is three windows wide, with houses 10, 22, and the central three set forward and featuring rusticated quoins. The central house has a segmental pediment above the attic. The first-floor centre windows of the projecting houses 10 and 22 are framed by Ionic columns supporting segmental pediments. The ground floor is rusticated. Doric porches have rusticated columns and balustraded parapets. Windows are square-headed, except for the round-headed windows on the first floor. Windows have architraves and cornices above the second-floor windows. The first floor features a console-bracketed balustraded stucco balcony. A dentil cornice runs above the first floor, projecting over the windows. Rich console brackets support the cornice above the third floor. Attics are present on the central three houses and the projecting end houses, as well as on numbers 11, 12, and 13. A bracketed subsidiary cornice to the attic was originally present on numbers 11, 12, and 13, but has since been removed. Cast iron area railings are present. The terrace forms an integral part of a grand planned layout.
