Description

Two attached houses, dating to around 1840, now combined into a single building. They are constructed of stucco and have slate pitched roofs, with the roofline extending to the eaves on the left and to a parapet on the right. The lower section on the left is three windows wide, while the taller section on the right is two windows wide. A large porch was added around 1860 in the centre, built of brick with rusticated brick quoins and a gauged arched entrance with a glass canopy beneath an elaborate pedimented gate. Window architraves are square-headed on the left-hand section with ground floor cornices, and segmental on the ground floor of the right-hand section. The windows are sashes and casements, some with glazing bars. The ground floor of the left-hand section contains stained glass and an LCC plaque commemorating the botanist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), who formerly resided at this address.
