Description

No. 31 Weymouth Street is a terraced town house built between 1912 and 1913, primarily designed by Joass, with contributions from Belcher and Joass. The house features a Portland ashlar facing and a slate roof, showcasing Neo Grec details that are relatively uncommon for a domestic building. It stands three storeys tall with a dormered mansard and a basement, and is three windows wide.

The central projecting porch is supported by slender columns in the style of the Tower of the Winds. To the left are full-height slightly canted bays, while to the right is the entrance to the mews. The central section has shallow recessed square-headed windows, with the first-floor window adorned with an open pediment on brackets. All windows are casemented with glazing bars, with those in the canted bays featuring thin ashlar dividers and transoms. The upper storey windows have keyblocks above them.

A deep first-floor plat band is decorated with Greek fret ornament, and the canted bays are topped with honeycombed parapets, while the central section rises straight to the parapet coping. This building is part of the early 20th-century efforts by the Portland (Howard de Walden) Estate to restore the residential character of an area that had become too professional.
