Description

Terraced town houses of around 1777, built as part of the Harley Street development on the Portland Estate. They were likely designed by John White in collaboration with the plasterer Thomas Collins, who were associated with Sir William Chambers. The houses are constructed of stock brick with slate roofs. They are four storeys high, with dormered mansard roof to number 94, and have basements. Each house has a three-window front. They feature broad semicircular arched doorways to the left, with Coade stone vermiculated detailing and keystones above the arches. The doorways have panelled doors, pilastered sidelights, moulded doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, each beneath a flat, gauged arch. A plat band and sill band are present, along with a cornice over the second floor and a modillion cornice and blocking course above. Continuous cast iron balconies are found on the first floor. Cast iron area railings are also present.

The interiors are well-preserved and more elaborate than typically found in speculative houses of this quality, though with similar features. A spacious, top-lit stone geometrical staircase is a prominent feature, with an anthemion-lyre pattern wrought iron balustrade and swag ornament to the skylight drums. Fluted and swagged friezes, and wreathed ceiling panels are also present. Number 92 has inset painted panels in the ceiling of the first-floor drawing room, in the Adam style. Number 94 features stucco mythological relief medallions over the chimneypieces, in the style of Sir William Chambers, and these are effectively used in the hall, which has an archway leading to the staircase. Chimneypieces are made with inlaid marble Ionic columns or pilasters, and the doors are of mahogany.
