Description
Nos. 100 and 102 Harley Street are terraced townhouses built around 1777 as part of the Portland Estate development, likely designed by John White in partnership with the plasterer Thomas Collins, who were associates of Sir William Chambers. The houses are constructed of stock brick and feature slate roofs. They rise four storeys above a basement and have three-window wide fronts.
The doorways are semicircular arched and are located to the left and right, adorned with Coade stone vermiculated rustications and head keystones. Each house has panelled doors, sidelights, and patterned fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows set under flat gauged arches. Notably, No. 102 has mid-19th century stucco architraves with pediments added on the first floor. The buildings also feature a first-floor plat band and sill bands, a modillion cornice, and a blocking course.
Both houses have early and mid-19th century cast iron balconies across the first floor. The area railings are original, with flambe urn finials on No. 102 and plumbed spikes on No. 100. Inside, the properties retain several notable features typical of the 1770s Harley Street development, including stone staircases with wrought iron balustrades in No. 100 and a plain cast iron balustrade in No. 102. Additional interior details include some fluted friezes and stucco mythological medallions framed by garlands over the chimneypieces.
