Description
Nos 44 and 45 Wimpole Street are terraced townhouses built in the 1770s as part of the Portland estate development, with mid-19th century alterations and a circa 1900 wing on the Weymouth Street return of No 44. The houses are constructed of stock brick with stucco dressings and a channelled stucco ground floor. They rise to four storeys, with No 45 featuring a dormered mansard roof and both houses having basements. The fronts are three windows wide and lack stylistic embellishments.
Each house has semicircular arched doorways on either side, featuring plain imposts, rustic voussoirs, and masked Coade keystones. The doors are panelled, with sidelights and fanlights in a simple Venetian style. The upper floors have recessed sash windows, with French windows on the first floor of No 44. The windows on the first and second floors of No 44 are eared and have consoled cornices, while the attic floor of No 44 does not have architraves.
The return of No 44 features stucco channelling on the single-storey wing added around 1900, which includes a three-bay loggia supported by Baroque tapered antae with festooned capitals. There is a plat band above the ground floor and a sill course at the first floor of No 45. A main cornice is present over the second floor, and the attic has a parapet with coping. A Victorian cast iron balcony adorns the first floor of No 44, and the area railings are made of cast iron with plumbed spike finials. The interiors have not been inspected.
