Description

No. 24 Upper Wimpole Street is a terraced town house built around 1780-1790, likely designed by John White for the Portland Estate. The building is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and features a slate roof. It has four storeys and a dormered mansard, sitting above a basement. The front is three windows wide and lacks decorative elements. To the left, there is a semicircular arched doorway with an architraved panelled door, framed by inset half Ionic fluted pilasters, an enriched cornice above the door, and a fanlight surrounded by an inscribed archivolt with a decorative paterae studded surround. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches. A plat band runs above the ground floor, and there is a parapet with coping. The first floor features a cast iron balcony with a Victorian scroll pattern, and the area railings are topped with flambé urn finials. Inside, the house retains notable features, particularly the plasterwork on the ceilings, possibly by John Utterton, which includes inset panels. The interior also boasts a stone top-lit geometrical staircase with a delicate wrought iron balustrade and statuary marble chimneypieces.
