Description

34 Weymouth Street is a "villa" built in 1908 by F M Elgood. It’s an example of a Free Style "Queen Anne" design, constructed from red brick and Portland stone with a slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a dormered mansard and a basement. It has four windows across the front, with the outer bays projecting and featuring shaped gables above. The entrance is located slightly left of centre and has a prominent console-supported doorway with a cornice hood. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with leaded lights; the windows in the canted bays have segmental label mouldings. There are garlanded round windows set within the heavily shaped gables, and a segmental-headed four-light attic window above the eaves in the centre. The parapets of the canted bays are finished with ball finials, and the shaped gables have heavily moulded copings. Cast iron area railings with scrollwork and urn finials are also present. The building was part of an early 20th-century initiative by the Portland (Howard de Walden) Estate to restore the residential character of the area. It is included in the register primarily for group value.
